Mrs. Amelia Armstrong [email protected]
This is Mrs. Armstrong's fifteenth year as the vocal music teacher at PHS. She teaches two curricular choirs (Choralaires and Cantorum), Beginning Guitar, and weekly voice lessons to every choir student. She also directs the Blue Notes jazz choir and the biennial musical. Mrs. Armstrong grew up in Wausau, and graduated from Wausau West High School in 2000. While she was in high school, Mrs. A. enjoyed participating in music, athletics, theater, and publications staff.
In college, Mrs. Armstrong studied vocal music education and Spanish. She received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Wartburg College (Waverly, Iowa) in May of 2004, and earned her Master of Music Education degree from the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) in August of 2009. Mrs. Armstrong is a member of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education. She is an active WSMA Adjudicator, and a board member of the Wisconsin Advocates for Music Education. She also serves the Wisconsin Choral Directors Association as the Chair for Youth Choirs and the 2017 convention hospitality chair. In 2015, she received grant funding from the Wisconsin Arts Board and Platteville Community Fund for a composer residency and commission. "The Strange Night", a choral work by Heidi Joosten, is based on a local mystery, and was premiered by 160 singers in grades 6-12. In October of 2015, she and her colleagues presented a session entitled "Small town, big boosters: How to make the most of your small town music booster organization" at the Wisconsin State Music Conference. In the fall of 2016, Mrs. Armstrong started a Beginning Guitar class at PHS, funded by grants from the Platteville Community Fund, the Platteville Music Boosters, and Platteville Public Schools.
In her spare time, Mrs. Armstrong enjoys cooking, Zumba, and being outdoors. She and her husband Zack live in Platteville with their two sons, Gabriel (8) and Samuel (5).
